Mrs. Wheeler Goes to Washington by Elizabeth Wheeler Colman

Wednesday, September 1st @ 2pm

Behind every successful man, there’s a woman — at least that’s the premise of this book from Colman, the daughter of six-term Montana Senator Burton K. Wheeler.

Colman contends her mother, Lulu M. White, “was the force behind the Senator throughout his twenty-four-year career in Washington” (1922-46).

Senator Wheeler is best remembered as the leader of the opposition to Roosevelt’s court-packing attempt in 1937.

Colman’s memoir of her mother’s role in Wheeler’s political career is well-written, providing an interesting view of a westerner in Congress.

Also of interest is the claim that the 1939 Jimmy Stewart film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was based on Wheeler’s career.
